Hunza valley embroidery
Iris and Butterfly Garden on Gold, Dark Border
Wall Hangings
A tall iris with muted plum petals and long green blades grows from a sandy mound while a small butterfly hovers nearby, set on a warm golden field and framed by a near-black border of red-and-cream flowering vines. The single flowering plant with an insect recalls the naturalistic floral qalmi tradition of Hunza embroidery, suggesting a living garden moment. Worked by hand in silk and wool, the strong dark border and luminous center make it a focused botanical wall panel.
The tradition
Hunza valley embroidery
The wall hangings carry Hunza's embroidery off the body and onto the wall. They blend traditional valley motifs — the same ibex horns, leopards and floral forms found on caps and wedding veils — with the freer compositions of contemporary artists trained in the workshop.
Made to be seen as textile art, each hanging is a panel of dense hand embroidery rather than a functional floor piece, so the silk catches the light and the design can be read close-up.
Motifs & meaning

Turangkish
Ibex horns — strength and surefootedness.
Herimani chuk
The millipede, a rhythmic protective border form.
Floral qalmi
Long-and-short silk stitches forming gardens of flowers.
Avant-garde fields
Modern compositions extending the tradition forward.
Materials & technique
How it is made
Hand-embroidered in naturally coloured silk and wool thread, mounted as a panel so the stitching reads as art rather than floor covering.
