Hunza valley embroidery
Eight-Point Star Tumbling-Block Geometric Square
Wall Hangings
A square field holds an interlocking pattern of eight-pointed stars and three-dimensional 'tumbling block' diamonds in cream, deep red, and olive, set off by ochre quatrefoils and a striped rope-twist border. The crisp optical geometry is a contemporary, almost mosaic-like composition built on the structured star motifs found in traditional embroidery. Worked by hand in silk and wool, its strong symmetry and tile-like depth make it a striking geometric wall panel.
The tradition
Hunza valley embroidery
The wall hangings carry Hunza's embroidery off the body and onto the wall. They blend traditional valley motifs — the same ibex horns, leopards and floral forms found on caps and wedding veils — with the freer compositions of contemporary artists trained in the workshop.
Made to be seen as textile art, each hanging is a panel of dense hand embroidery rather than a functional floor piece, so the silk catches the light and the design can be read close-up.
Motifs & meaning
Reading the design
Wall hangings mix Hunza's heritage motifs with new artistic perspectives.
Turangkish
Ibex horns — strength and surefootedness.
Herimani chuk
The millipede, a rhythmic protective border form.
Floral qalmi
Long-and-short silk stitches forming gardens of flowers.
Avant-garde fields
Modern compositions extending the tradition forward.
Materials & technique
How it is made
Hand-embroidered in naturally coloured silk and wool thread, mounted as a panel so the stitching reads as art rather than floor covering.
