Olive Clutch with Scalloped Embroidered Flap

Carpet Purses & Bags

A long clutch in warm olive and tan, its scalloped flap worked in ivory and green scrolling cross-stitch. The fine geometric embroidery carries Hunza's cap-and-veil motifs onto a modern bag. Handmade in the workshop from embroidered carpet weaving.

The tradition

Hunza valley embroidery

The carpet purses and bags take Hunza's embroidery off the loom and into the hand. The same educated women artisans who work the cushion covers and wall hangings stitch panels of fine silk-thread cross-stitch, which are then mounted onto clutches, handbags and evening purses.

Each bag is effectively one of a kind: the embroidered front is worked first as a small textile, drawing on the valley's cap-and-veil motifs, before being made up into a finished, usable accessory.

Motifs & meaning

Reading the design

The bags carry Hunza's embroidery vocabulary in miniature — geometric and floral forms worked in dense cross-stitch.

  • Diamond lattice

Repeating lozenges drawn from cap and cushion embroidery.

  • Sunburst medallion

A radiating star standing in for a carpet's central gül.

  • Floral band

Rows of stylised flowers from the valley's veil designs.

  • Running border

A guard band framing the panel like a small rug.

Materials & technique

How it is made

A hand cross-stitched silk-thread panel, worked in Hunza's traditional stitches, mounted onto a structured clutch or handbag with handles or a flap.
